Are you a margarita fan, who isn't? It is difficult to find a great margarita let alone the best margarita. I have created many margaritas throughout the years and I always come back to my favorite. With confidence I can say that this is the best blood orange margarita that you will ever have. It is made with few but fresh ingredients. This margarita is easy to make at home. Once you try it, you will want to make it again and again!!

This is the best blood orange margarita, with fresh blood orange and lime juice,Tequila and Topo Chico.

    What is a Blood Orange?

Blood oranges may have originated in the southern Mediterranean since the 18th century, but it's origins are still unknown. They are a common orange grown in Italy. Blood oranges are a special variety of orange, it is in essence a cross between an orange and a raspberry.

These are only grown from December to May during winter and spring. The cooler weather helps develop high levels of anthocyanin pigment (uncommon in citrus fruits). Therefore giving blood oranges its distinctive red color.

There's three common types of blood oranges.

Torroco from Italy. It's a medium size orange and probably the most flavorful and sweet of the three.

Moro the newest variety. It is the most colorful of the blood oranges with a deep red flesh and a rind with a bright red blush. It possess a more bitter flavor than the Torroco and Sanguinello.

Sanguinello discovered in spain, in 1929, it has reddish skin, few seeds, and a sweet and tender flesh.

Blood oranges have high levels of Vitamin C, may help prevent cancer and it is packed with antioxidants.

    Blood Orange Uses

Blood Oranges can be used in many recipes. You can make marmalade, syrup, cocktails, sauces, salads, dressings, cakes, buttercream frosting. The possibilities are endless.

They can be stored at room temperature in a well air circulated bowl for several days. For longer storage, placed oranges in a sealed container, in the produce bin in your refrigerator.

    What makes the best Margarita

There are three elements that makes a great margarita: Fresh ingredients, good quality Tequila or Mezcal and overall flavor. I start with organic blood oranges and limes (from Trader Joe's).

If you cannot find Blood Oranges, you can always use grapefruit or Navel oranges. It makes a difference when you use fresh squeezed juice instead of the awful store bought mix. Next for the spirit, I always use Mezcal- Del Maguey Vida and El Silencio are my two favorites.

However, for this recipe I used Patron Tequila. After that, adding triple sec will cut down the slight bitterness of the orange and lime. Lastly, top with Topo Chico for a touch of fizz. For the rim I used Twang-A-Rita Paloma Love but you can use salt. Making it the best and most refreshing blood orange margarita that you have ever had.

One final word: Use the recipe below, to make yourself a great margarita, you deserve it! Pin this recipe for later on Pinterest.
