I was introduced to this cocktail a few years ago while on vacation and it's probably one of the best cocktails I've had. Hugo Spritz with elderflower liqueur, fresh mint, bubbly Prosecco and effervescent soda water making this the best summer cocktail: Hugo Spritz!
What is a Hugo Spritz?
One thing about me I love me a good cocktail! Espcially a summer spritz! The Hugo Spritz is MY go to cocktail.
The Hugo is said to have been created by Roland Gruber in 2005 by a bartender in the northern Italian province called South Tyrol in the Dolomite Mountains.
Hugo spritz is Gruber's version and the rival of Aperol Spritz. The main difference is Aperol is made with a bitter aperitif and Hugo is made with elderflower liqueur.
Hugo spritz combines Prosecco, elderflower liqueur, seltzer water, mint and lime. It's effervescent, light, refreshing, perfect for those hot summer days.
Ingredients
- Prosecco - I use Korbel Prosecco for this recipe but any sparkling wine including champagne can be used also.
- Elderflower Liqueur - St Germaine, Drillaud and St Elder are my favorites to use. St Germaine being the most expensive, Drillaud and St Elder is budget friendly. For this recipe I am using ST Germaine.
- Carbonated Water - Club Soda and Mineral water like Topo Chico are my favorite sparkling waters to use.
- Mint Leaves - it adds that refreshing tone to the spritz.
- Lime wheels - these make the spritz more colorful

How to make the Hugo Spritz
- Muddle lightly the mint leaves to release the oils that gives the spritz that refreshing flavor.
- Add the Elderflower liqueur.
- Add the Prosecco or any other sparkling wine.
- Top with club soda or seltzer water.
- Add a lemon wheel and with a bar spoon stir gently.
- Garnish with more lemon wheels and mint.
Pro-Tip: Another way to release the oil, grab a few mint leaves, placed them between your hands and give them a good slap. This is an alternate way to the muddling.
Pairings
The Hugo Spritz pairs so well with different foods! Like these Warm Langostino rolls with Brown Truffle Butter, Cubano Sandwich, and this French Ham and Butter Sandwich (Jambon Beurre).
