It is blood orange season! It means I will have a lot of blood oranges around and I love to come up with a good crafted cocktail. Fresh blood orange and Meyer lemon juice, Effen blood orange vodka and a secret ingredient makes this a delicious and easy blood orange vodka sour cocktail!!!

Easy Blood Orange Vodka Sour Cocktail

    What is a Blood Orange?

Blood oranges may have originated in the southern Mediterranean since the 18th century, but it’s origins are still unknown. They are a common orange grown in Italy. Blood oranges are a special variety of orange, it is in essence a cross between an orange and a raspberry.

These are only grown from December to May during winter and spring. The cooler weather helps develop high levels of anthocyanin pigment (uncommon in citrus fruits). Therefore giving blood oranges its distinctive red color.

Creating This Easy Blood Orange Vodka Sour.

Sour usually contains a base liquor like Whiskey, Vodka, Tequila, Gin, etc, lemon or lime juice and some sort of sweetner like simple syrup or agave, and egg whites. For this recipe I will be using something different instead of egg whites.

I am using Effen Blood Orange flavored vodka. It's imported from Holland and it used 100% Wheat from Northern France. Because wheat is extremely low in fatty acids resulting in a smooth silky vodka.

This vodka gives this blood orange cocktail a boost and you smooth finish.

I am not using an egg white, I am using Aquafaba.

What is Aquafaba you might ask? In simple words it's the liquid in a can of chickpeas. It is a replacement for eggs and egg whites.  Its composition of carbohydrates, proteins, and other soluble plant solids which have migrated from the seeds to the water during cooking gives it a wide range of emulsifying, foaming, binding, gelatinizing and thickening properties.

How to use it? Drain a can of chickpeas in a strainer on a large measuring cup. Aquafaba is great for Vegan cooking, cocktails and baking. Its starchy properties gives it this egg white like result. Mixed with cream of tartar in your baking goods will result in a fluffy consistency. My favorite way to use it is in cocktails that call for egg whites. I promise! the cocktail does not taste like chickpeas at all. It just gives it a smooth, velvety, creamy foam adding a whole other level of perfection to any cocktail.

How to store it? Pour about 1-2 tbsp into an ice cube tray and freeze. To use after being frozen, thaw out into a glass or microwave for faster results.

    The Mixology in the Cocktail.

To successfully get the lovely dreamy foam in this cocktail, it is important that you follow and do not skip a few steps!

First and the most important step: You will NOT add ice to a cocktail shaker at first.

Add the Blood orange juice, Meyer lemon juice, simple syrup and Aquafaba. You will do what is called a DRY SHAKE (this is when you shake a cocktail at room temperature without adding ice). Shake vigorously for about 1-2 minutes until it is completely emulsified.

Now you can add about 4-5 ice cubes. Close and Shake about 11 times.

Do not strain, pour into a small glass and watch as that beautiful velvety foam forms in your cocktail.

I have been experimenting with different liquors and juices. It's been so much fun to use the Aquafaba.

If you follow a Vegan Lifestyle this is a great way to get your Sour cocktail with that "egg white" effect without having to use an actual egg.
